WHO IS UBER MATOS?

Uber is someone like you and me, normal, a person who enjoys sports, a hard worker, and a life lover. Dominican, born in Barahona in 1981, he has lived in Cabarete the last six years and is known to everyone as a beautiful and wonderful person.

Bartender at one of the best known bars in Cabarete, he worked daily supporting his family and winning over the hearts of many people.  He is known for his bright smile, great mood and fantastic hair.

He chose to leave the university where he was studying industrial engineering in order to support his mother, brothers and sisters, oftentimes working two jobs.

Some of his favorite activities are motocross, mountain biking,  surfing,  kitesurfing and wakeboarding.

WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM?

On September 24th, a random sunny day, he and his friends decided to make a downhill mountain bike ride in Puerto Plata.  They were to go from the top of the cable car to the bottom of the trail.  Unfortunately while riding down the trail he lost control of the bike.  He fell hitting his helmet  on a rock and continued to roll over. He ended up landing on a rock with his back, breaking his 3rd, 4th and 5th vertebrae.

After two hours of waiting and worrying the ambulance finally showed up but could only make it halfway to where he was lying.  He was carried the rest of the way to the ambulance by his friends and from there they proceeded to the hospital.  After waiting several hours at the hospital in Puerto Plata they learned that his condition was severe.    They decided to transport him to Santiago where they hoped they could get better care.  After a very expensive operation Uber stayed in the hospital a little over a week.  He has since been transfered back to Cabarete where he awaits to see what the next step is on his journey to walking again.

WHAT DOES HE NEED?

Uber's current condition is stable but still grave.  He is not able to feel anything below his mid-chest and is unable to move his legs.  He is currently being attended by his girlfriend Nadine,  who never left his side,  his mother Maribel Matos, and his friends who give him all the moral support possible.  Currently they are looking for the best possible solution and medical care for this unfortunate accident.

What he needs from all of us is economical support.  He needs enough money to pay for the operation, rehabilitation,  medication, food,  basic necessities,  and also his rent.  There are also several more checkups with specialists and more than likely other surgeries that need our financial backing.

Now he is facing a new operation that will be done in Portugal but will travel via Madrid. Economical support is needed to cover the costs of visa, flight ticket, hospital, anaesthetic, drugs, rehabilitation, etc...

Thanks to Dr. Antonio Reis who will take care of the operation and is guiding and leading us.
